An ancient recipe

I invented this recipe in my early childhood. It is one of my better inventions. Are you ready to be amazed?


The most important ingredient

the more material you can remove, the better.

So now you have it. You can make your own - it really is not that difficult. Those of my readers in the USA please note that corn syrup will simply not do as a substitute for Lyle's Golden Syrup. There is absolutely no comparison. For variations on the recipe, try smothering with clotted cream. Another variation is to omit the trifle sponge. This will reduce cost without affecting the taste overmuch. Enjoy!

Christmas Day

Sarah's indomitable mincemeat pies

Brunch at 1015 at my daughter's so my constitutional run had to be before this. I ran along what we call Goat man's lane via Johnstown, turning right onto the Wicklow Gap to Holywood road, up over the hill, then right again, over a fence into and returning via Holywood woods, then joining the Tulfarris loop, making a detour down to the lake to wash the mud off the dog. These Irish back roads are a bit hard under barefoot: the forest tracks are surprisingly easier going.

Christmas is all about eating and we did all of that. What better than mincemeat pies and ginger wine? Christmas is all about family: apart from my older daughter mine has been cast to the uttermost parts of the world. The rest of the community is almost family, but I still felt a bit isolated without Ali.

Messy Church

Staying with my sister I got my first experience of messy church. It is a kind of modern-day Sunday school but involved the parents as well. It was a tightly organised two hours of games, songs, a skit and a short talk followed by a full Christmas meal, with about 80 people who would not normally come to church. No charge is made. That's quite a challenge for an older congregation of about 30 to pull off! There was no evangelistic "pressure", just a reaching out in love to those in the neighbourhood. I liked it.



How did they cater for so many (those in the church ate afterwards from the more than adequate "12 baskets" left over)? The kitchen has a commercial style cooker (6 rings) and dish washer but no other special equipment. The kitchen team was headed by a woman who needs a wheelchair most of the time and her energetic husband: this couple have an extended family to look after too - and yet the food was excellent - amazing! Cool wall murals too.

The Hobbit


The Hobbit

This evening I enjoyed The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey in 3D HFR. But it did not completely satisfy.

Previously I had heard a review which said it was too life like, kinda like I have heard Mars bars criticised for being too sweet. My problem was that it was not lifelike enough. Partly because it is sheer fantasy in which the goodies are laughingly nigh impregnable. I do not think Tolkien meant the book to be funny. Partly because the medium, albeit cutting edge 3D, 48 frames per second with amazing special effects, is nowhere near as good as what I see with my eyes every day of my life.

This is the second 3D film I have seen. After due consideration I have to say that enjoyed the first, Cameron's fantastic Avatar, somewhat more. Because I could seriously imagine being there and could identify with the hero. Because it heralded a new age of 3D realism just as 2001 A Space Odyssey was a first of its kind in epic Sci-Fi and therefore it will go down as a place saver in history.

Barefoot Shooters Hill

New Eltham to Woolwich run

My sister lives in Green Lane, New Eltham. I had planned to reach Shooters Hill from here via Avery Hill park, but once there I figured that the Thames was not that far away so...

There are so many green areas in London - with good planning you might manage grass most of the time. My route followed parts of the Green Chain Walk but as it was not well signposted I lost it from time to time.

Nice to reach the river, run along to the Woolwich free ferry and watch a crossing before turning back. There is such a wonderful feeling of freedom in locomotion without dependence on any mechanical aid. To pass through the Royal Arsenal Gatehouse market like a spirit, evoking strange looks from stall keepers. Most Londoners look the other way if you try to catch their gaze but one guy remarked "lost your shoes?".  And what more euphoric feeling than descending from Shooters Hill through the wet grass of Oxleas Meadow?

Statistics: distance 20km (12.6 miles), maximum elevation 128m, minimum elevation 2m.

Goodbye Kate

Goodbye Kate, July 2012

Six months or so ago Kate emigrated to the land of Oz.

A few Sundays ago Ali and I were invited to the bungalow for afternoon tea - strange I thought, we don't usually bother with afternoon tea! We duly sat down and ate cakes and suchlike and then - in walks Kate. All the way from the land of Oz!

Strange to think that Kate is there somewhere between those lights in the sky. Goodbye Kate, thank you so much for coming to see me, for loving me that much. I will never forget.

Barefoot Clonea

The occasion: Kate has made a surprise visit back from Australia to celebrate my 60th and Ali's 61st birthday and we are together with her and Sarah and Jonathan for a weekend break at the Goldcoast golf hotelDungarvan

The particular occasion: Having sussed out the route the day before, I left the self-catering lodge on Saturday morning at 8am, cut across the golf course and onto Clonea Strand. What better terrain for barefoot running than short grass or smooth sand?  The air temperature was around 5 degC so it was a tad cold on the grass.

Strange that Google Maps and Google Earth has very poor satellite resolution imagery for this area, but Bing maps' resolution is excellent.  Whereas in some other locations the reverse is true.

Track statistics: 7.9 miles, average speed 5.7mph (including scrambling over rocks).

The sandy part of Clonea Strand is almost two miles long although broken by several reefs. The northern most stretch does not appear to have any (easy) public access so I had to climb a low cliff and scoot across a small field to gain the R675.

When I'm 64

Technically only 59.99 but an early surprise birthday dinner this evening because we are going away tomorrow. It is both scary and very strange to contemplate "I am 60" (or almost). Do I feel different? Yes, and no. Should I be different? Probably the same answer. 








Nice touch with the train. Even nicer with the golden syrup (how DO they survive, those people in the USA, without this magical substance?).

And afterwards some people said some nice things, and thankfully left out the bad things that they could have said. And a gift to buy myself a new bicycle...

Wow - thank you, everybody! I did not expect it, I did not know how to react, did not know what to say, etc, etc.

The thermionic valve

I wrote in a recent post that my father bought me some electrical bits and pieces from Mr Woolworth and thus set or more likely confirmed a course for my life.

Perhaps I was a strange kid. Back then the County Library rented the premises next door to my parents' home (it now occupies both this and my parents' home). I suppose most kids back then borrowed books of fiction but I searched out reference books on engineering and electronics. I do not think I understood all of what I read, mind you.

Back then I wished, oh how I wished, that I would meet a grown up who would give me a triode valve so that I could check out some of the stuff I had been reading about. How inaccessible can be the simple desires a child has. How vital is it that someone steps in to provide the answers or materials. How scary it is that a whole career might thus be at jeopardy.

Later on in my development I started to collect and dissect old radio sets and such like so I eventually got my triodes.  I went on to build my own oscilloscope based on the article "Investigator Oscilloscope" in Practical Electronics July - August 1967 see link.


The picture is from the link above and brings back happy memories. My version looked a bit prettier but the trace was as bad - very non-linear at the edges and appalling bandwidth, but at least it worked and it was useful. And it used valves, in particular the ECC81 double triode.

Later still a radio enthusiast who was a friend of a friend of the family died and I was given some of his stuff including boxes of unused valves: sad that I gave them away when I left home as they might have been very valuable now.

Now-a-days valves (vacuum tubes to our friends across the pond) have made a come back with audio freaks who claim to have golden ears. I made mention in a previous post of a balanced pentode audio amplifier I extracted from some equipment: it gave such wonderful sound quality. The two ingredients of valve and balanced (push pull) are hard to beat when it comes to audio reproduction.

I still create valve circuits sometimes when I doodle.  Along with maps of roads and railways, or cross sections of tunnels and caves.  They are that dear to me.

A valve is a pretty near perfect amplifying device. Much nicer in operation than a bipolar transistor. The input impedance is almost infinite. The transfer characteristic is at least smooth even if not as linear as one might desire (but a bipolar transistor is horribly non-linear).  And so cool to think of all those electrons doing their stuff like honey bees in a hive.


In operation the cathode 'k' is heated to red hot by the filament 'hh'. The electronics in the cathode are thus vibrating a lot (their increase in vibrational energy IS what we call increase in temperature) and some 'boil' off. The valve or 'tube' is evacuated so there are no air molecules to get in the way of those electrons moving. And there is a big metal plate a few mm away called the anode 'a' which is at a 'high tension' or high positive potential (voltage) with respect to the cathode, so it attracts those electrons and hence am electric current flows. Between cathode and anode there is a potential gradient (aka electric field). Very much closer to the cathode than the anode is a grid of thin wires 'g1'. If a relatively small negative potential is applied to the grid, because at its point the potential otherwise due to the anode is not yet that great because the anode is much further away, the negative voltage on the grid is enough to turn back some or maybe all the electrons. Thus a small voltage on the grid can control the electron flow.  Moreover, because the grid is negative, it repels the electrons and thus does not pick them up thus no grid current flows thus the input impedance is very high, or put another way no work is done by the grid.

The potential drop across the cathode resistor 'RK' due to the finite anode current provides the negative bias required to operate the grid. Some of the valve radios I had were old enough to require a separate grid bias battery.

In those early days I saved up my pocket money over many weeks to buy a 120V battery.  90V batteries were comparatively common back then but I had convinced myself (I know not how) that I needed the rarer 120V kind. The cruel thing was that, when I eventually got it, it lasted hardly any time before it ran out of juice. I rather think it was old stock by the time I got it.

A water analogue for the triode? The best I can come up with is a mountain stream falling over a high cliff. The height implies a lot of potential power and is analogous to the high tension. And by inserting a relatively small dam (the grid) upstream of the fall you can control this power.

Where was I?

I was staying with some young people for a short holiday in a house about 5 miles away from home: the other end of Goat Man's lane. On waking I found I had not packed any clothes so decided to run/walk back home to get a change of clothes then be back before the rest were ready to go out. My son-in-law Jonathan came with me and brought his bike. We had traversed a field and just gone through a gap in a hedge into a further field when I released I had not told our host where I was going, so I went back to do so then rejoined him, this time going a slightly different way through a wicket gate into the further field. By this time Jonathan had been joined by Sarah with her bike. We moved on - the grass felt good between my toes - and soon started descending into a rich and beautiful valley laced with lakes unknown to me.

I was surprised that I did not recognise the scenery given that we were so close to home but figured that sooner or later we would recognise a landmark. I was barefoot but had my trainers with me "just in case" and decided to lace them to Jonathan's bike. Whilst doing so Sarah had moved on ahead and I then had to run after her to tell her not to keep choosing the paths that led further down into the valley because I knew we would eventually have to climb out of the valley and towards the left to get home.

We continued to see no recognisable landmarks. Eventually we came to a ledge where we could look down thousands of feet into a distant valley ending in an inlet from the sea. It was intensely beautiful. There was a man there who showed us his Ordnance Survey map of the area - I unfolded it and it showed the inlet we were looking at but nothing that I recognised. I realised that we had entered another world when we came through that gap in the hedge or later the wicket gate. Later we met a man with a red blotchy face who told us where we were - he gave a name (which I do not remember) - when I looked up at him again his face was clear and I realised that it was his nervousness that had caused the blotches. After this we tried to climb out of the valley and it was then that Alison woke me.

Today my baby came home

OK, so I'm 60 this week. So what? My daughter Sarah and her husband invited us to afternoon tea at their place, followed by dinner. We duly arrived at 1500 hours and were served tea in china cups with one's little finger pointing out, various sweetmeats including the proverbial Mr Kipling's exceedingly good Cherry Bakewell tarts. And then the door opens and in walks Kate. Kate, who is meant to be flying Sky-West airplanes in Brisbane. Kate, who is supposed to be refused leave because she hasn't been working there for long enough. If you do not believe this, I admit far fetched story, check out her blog.

Ram Pumps revisited

I wonder why has my post Waterworks and Ram Pumps attracted more hits than any other page in my blog?  I plan to visit Alresford in a few weeks time and if I have opportunity to explore the sites I mentioned I shall report my findings here.

Perhaps it will not be so obvious to some of you as it is to me that the operation of the Ram Pump is much the same as that of the Boost Converter in electronics. Most folk are at least aware of the analogue between water and electricity.


The boost converter uses a low voltage d.c. supply to generate a higher voltage d.c. to drive a load.  Voltage in electricity answers to head or pressure with hydraulics. The output voltage of a boost converter can be perhaps as much as a hundred times the input voltage.  Of course you do not get "something for nothing" any more than with the Ram Pump because the output current is much less than the input current.

The switch shown is an analogue of the clack valve. It does not function automatically as in the Ram Pump but is operated by some control electronics not shown.  The switch is typically a MOSFET.

Initially the switch is closed (like the clack valve being open) and the supply V is connected.  The defining equation for an inductor is:


The interia of the water in the delivery pipe answers to the inductor. The diode answers to the non-return valve placed after the clack valve in the Ram Pump.V and L are constant therefore di/dt is constant which means that the current steadily grows. At a certain point the switch is opened (like the clack valve shutting) which means that the current i suddenly becomes zero, or di/dt becomes infinite.  Since L is a constant that means that an infinite voltage appears across the inductor. Whilst this voltage exceeds that across the load the diode conducts and delivers the output voltage.

The process now repeats so that charge is progressively "pumped" through the diode into the load.  The circuit thus generates spikes of high voltage.

In practice a capacitor is required across the load to smooth out these spikes, just as an expansion chamber is required in the Ram Pump.

Of course it isn't quite as good as that - it is not possible to turn the switch off that suddenly, inductors are not perfect, and so on.  The Ram Pump delivery pipe and the water itself will "give" (expand) with increasing pressure so will soften the water hammer.  And diodes are far from perfect.

The job of the control electronics is to pick the right time to operate the switch and to adjust the process to give the desired output voltage. There are many chips on the market that will do this function.
